Burnham and District Beekeepers are holding a

course for beginners to beekeeping starting on Thursday 19th January 2012.

 

The six week course will take place at King Alfred School, Burnham Road, Highbridge on Thursday evenings in the main school hall, commencing at 7.30 pm.  The tutor will be Gerald Fisher.

 

The proposed programme is as follows:

19th January: Introduction: What is beekeeping? What is a Honeybee? Costs and Stings.

26th January: About the bees: Occupants of the hive, Elementary biology, Lifecycle of the colony.

2nd February: Equipment: Parts of hive, sources, assembling and preparing, new or second-hand, siting the hive.

9th February: Bee handling: Opening the hive, use of smoker, precautions, introduction to swarming.

16th February: Honey production: forage, production and harvesting, extracting, preparation for winter.

23rd February: Trouble-shooting: diseases, pests and predators, recapitulation and open forum.

The cost for the course will be £30.
