INTRODUCTION TO BEEKEEPING

February and March 2011

South Eastern Division will be running an Introduction to Beekeeping course in February and March 2011. The course will consist of six lectures, and is intended to introduce bees and beekeeping to people who are considering keeping bees for the first time, or who are in the early stages of the craft.

 The format is flexible, but the course will start on Thursday 10 th February and will run on 6 consecutive Thursdays, ending on 17 th March. All sessions will be held in Charlton Musgrove Village, from 7.30 – 9 pm, with refreshments provided. Course notes will be available.

Charge for the six sessions will be £25, which will include a year's Associate Membership of SBKA's South Eastern Division.

The proposed programme is as follows:

10th February: Introduction: What is beekeeping? What is a Honeybee? Costs and Stings.

17th February: About the bees: Occupants of the hive, Elementary biology, Lifecycle of the colony.

24th February: Equipment: Parts of hive, sources, assembling and preparing, new or second-hand, siting the hive.

3rd March: Bee handling: Opening the hive, use of smoker, precautions, introduction to swarming.

10th March: Honey production: forage, production and harvesting, extracting, preparation for winter.

17th March: Trouble-shooting: diseases, pests and predators, recapitulation and open forum.
