Honey Show
The Central Division Honey Show 2023 took place in the Honey Tent at the Mid-Somerset Show in Cannards Grave, Shepton Mallet on Sunday 20 August. The Mid-Somerset Show is the only one day agricultural show in the South-West with free admission to the Show for pedestrians. It offers a fantastic day out for all the family with wonderful arrays of food and drink, livestock displays, craft stalls, cheese tasting and dog shows.
It was considered by all to be a great success and thanks and congratulations are extended to all who took part, whether it was by helping before or after the event, by stewarding on the day or by submitting entries to the show classes.
We were pleased that, for the second year running, there were sufficient entries to enable a Blue Riband to be awarded for the Best in Show, at the discretion of the National Honey Show accredited Chief Judge. This year it was won by Yvonne Pearce for her magnificent decorated cake.
The public attendance in the marquee was good and all the exhibits were well received. The Honey Tent featured an observation hive, topical displays including legally imported Asian and European Hornets set in acrylic, a produce shop and the ever-popular candle rolling, plus a busy stand on pollination, which included the distribution of free seeds. We were pleased to host a bee-themed pottery stall again this year.
Next year's Mid Somerset Show, and Central's Honey Show, will be on Sunday 18 August 2024. The Schedule (see below) has yet to be updated, but gives a good idea for any local beekeeper who wants to plan ahead!
