Words like the ‘biggest’ and ‘best’ make great media headlines and in the case of this year’s County Honey Show, hosted by Taunton Division, they are true!
There were a record 420 or so entries and it was extremely pleasing to meet lots of new exhibitors from more Divisions this year. And it was a delight to see hundreds of lb jars of different honeys, moulded and sculpted wax and other products from or inspired by beekeeping. The coveted Blue Ribbon, chosen by the judges as their best in show, went to John Roberts, a beekeeper from Cornwall. [Note: The County Honey Show is open to exhibitors who are members of SBKA as well as other county associations]. All things beekeeping - there was candle rolling, an observation hive, live beekeeping demonstrations and honey tasting - attracted many thousands of visitors throughout the two-day show. Also, the public signed-up whole-heartedly to look out for yellow-legged Asian hornets. The Asian hornet roadshow, which was launched at the Royal Bath & West Show, was positioned at the back of the Bees & Honey feature. Without exception, visitors were interested in the Asian hornet, the problems it would cause if it became established in the UK, and picked up our information leaflets, ID cards and stickers.
